I Renewable Energy Systems Optimiser (RenSys)

The increasing ambitions to meet net zero by 2050, requires an investment into renewable energy on many scales, from large scale wind farms to small microgrids.  A concern with renewable energy generation is the intermittency of the generation not aligning with demand.  A lack of system optimization can lead to substantial energy curtailment or a shortfall in generation, affecting electricity consumers.

Crondall Energy has been at the forefront of offshore energy, with in-house industry experts and decades of accumulated knowledge.  Crondall Energy has developed unique skills in optimizing renewable energy solutions, by combining expertise in offshore energy, and in renewable energy systems.  This knowledge has been assembled into an in-house optimization process, RenSys which enables minimisation of TOTEX, emissions, and curtailment, to maximise the value of combined energy generation and storage systems; renewable energy, Energy Storage, hydrocarbon generation, and grid.

Crondall Energy offers services for optimising the design of renewable energy systems at a concept and FEED level. RenSys simulates the performance of energy systems in the time-domain using historical meteorological data, capturing aspects such as real-time renewable energy generation, energy storage charging/discharging, and energy shortfall, or curtailment.

Crondall Energy uses the data output by RenSys to design an optimised energy system suitable for each application. The optimisation is carried out by considering three main aspects: cost, reliability, and emissions.

I Who can benefit from RenSys?

Anyone who is at looking at renewable energy systems at a concept to FEED stage, from kW to GW scale. Some examples include;

  • Hydrogen hubs – Aiming to size generation, storage, grid connection.  As well as forecasting electrolysers utilisation

  • Microgrids (kW to GW scale) – Sizing of generation (renewable and hydrocarbon), storage, curtailment, and shortfall.  As well as estimating emissions associated with the microgrid

  • Wind curtailment assessment for any wind farm scale

I What does RenSys deliver?

  • The analysis provides a means to understand how to optimise a renewable energy system at an early stage of a project. In the case of a wind farm, our engineers use RenSys to optimise a wind farm design based on project TOTEX, and reduction in emissions. This service can then be followed up with more detailed engineering, modelling aspect such as energy losses through cabling, and broader project assistance.

  • Statistical data of an overall system, such as, monthly energy profiles, overall CAPEX, OPEX, and GHG emissions data. This provides an unbiased image of a system performance allowing for better management early in a project, and realistic estimates of financial performance.

  • Delivers data on individual components of the energy system, such as renewable energy curtailment, renewable energy capacity factor, energy storage system performance, generator loading and others according to the composition of the system.  Crondall Energy uses this to build up accurate operations and maintenance schedules and identify any potential red flags at an early project stage.

Effectively, RenSys is not only a tool, but a process that Crondall Energy uses to optimise renewable energy systems based on cost, reliability and emissions.  It is a muti-layered process that provides an in-depth investigation into the system, its subcomponents, their performance, and project financials.  The RenSys process will provide a complete understanding of renewable energy system project at the early stages of a project.
