I SAFEMOOR
Across the oil and gas industry, mooring line failure rates are 40 times higher than design code predictions. Floating offshore wind will enhance this challenge by increasing the number of components by an order of magnitude, introducing more complex motions from coupling the wind turbine with hull, and increasing line fatigue due to more cyclical loads.
Crondall Energy have developed a “one stop shop” for mooring integrity management.
SafeMoor combines machine learning, hydrodynamic simulations and operational data to provide continuous assessment of mooring system health. The technology is applicable for all mooring lines, reducing the risk of mooring line failure for FPSOs, FLNGs, and for floating wind turbines.
SafeMoor delivers real-time monitoring and predictive integrity insights. By identifying abnormal loading, degradation trends and potential failure events at an early stage, SafeMoor aims to reduce the risk of unplanned mooring line failures by 90%, with an associated OPEX reduction of over 40%.
SafeMoor has achieved a Technology Readiness Level of 5, having undertaken advanced prototype trials via partnerships with Catapult Offshore Renewable Energy, Offshore Wind Growth Partnership, UKRI Innovate UK and Flotation Energy. The technology was demonstrated in 2025 via monitoring of the mooring system on the BPT demonstrator buoy, where SafeMoor’s predicted line loads achieved 95% accuracy against a 12-hour test period of offshore data.
Crondall Energy has also performed anchor drag monitoring studies, with the intention of adding an anchor monitoring module as an extension to SafeMoor. This would allow identification of likely failure mechanisms and support actions for anchors.
