Upheaval Buckling of an Offshore Pipeline

Crondall Energy’s technical excellence in pipeline systems design helped to secure several failure investigations studies supported by the team’s extensive knowledge of subsea pipeline systems and their analytical approach to identify pipeline failure mechanisms.

Crondall Energy’s investigations on a full‑bore rupture of a pipeline system allowed to conclude that a combination of mechanisms rather than a particular mechanism contribute to incidents and catastrophic failures. Our expert has been carrying out Expert Witness responsibilities on multiple cases of upheaval buckling of offshore and onshore pipelines (including pipe-in-pipe systems) that lead to pipeline failures with different root causes. Moreover, Crondall Energy routinely carries out investigations of unexpected operational behaviour on pipeline systems, including unexpected buckling or pipeline walking behaviour. In most cases these would have led to failure had the operator not recognised and acted upon observations from operational monitoring. In most cases Crondall Energy has also been engaged by the operator offering mitigation engineering expertise to resolve the issue.
